Global Warming - A Different Take

The inevitable match is now on! As environmentalists continue to raise awareness about increasing global warming, the corporates, who up till now have been rubbishing such claims, have suddenly sat up and started to take notice. The time for “passing the buck” has ended, as rivals join hands to fight a common enemy - global warming. Even though the debate continue to rage about whether global warming is natural or man-made, the fact remains that the temperatures worldwide have risen by more than one degree in the recent past. The match between man and nature has started. It remains to be seen how efficiently nations can manage this crisis.

A lot has been written on the subject of global warming. A recent article in Economist (requires subscription), for example, is particularly noteworthy. The article concerns a recent study conducted by Govindasamy Bala, of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California. The recent study suggests that removing all the trees from the planet might actually make it cooler, whereas adding more trees might well make the planet more warmer. Surprised?? … Read on …

Trees help remove atmospheric carbon dioxide through a process called photosynthesis, whereby they take in carbon dioxide through their leaves and give off oxygen. This helps to cleanse the atmosphere of harmful gases and generate more oxygen - the ether of life. Similarly, water evaporating from the leaves and stems of plants, through a process called transpiration, is responsible for local cooling. Bala’s research suggests, however, that trees are also heating the planet by other means. According to the article:

The reason for this is that trees affect the world’s temperature by means other than the carbon they sequester. For instance forests, being generally green and bristly things, remain quite a dark shade even after a blizzard. They are certainly darker than grasslands smothered in snow, and thus they can absorb more of the sun’s heat than vegetation which might otherwise cover the same stretch of land. That warms things up.

Dr Bala’s model suggests that complete deforestation would cause an additional 1.3°C temperature rise compared with business as usual, because of the higher carbon-dioxide levels that would result. However, the additional reflectivity of the planet would cause 1.6°C of cooling. A treeless world would thus, as he reports in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, be 0.3°C cooler than otherwise.

This is still being discussed from a theoretical perspective. However, the article references examples in Russia and Canada though, where chopping down trees has resulted in local cooling. The debate continues and the occurrence of terms, such as carbon trading and energy efficiency, is becoming more prevalent in the media. All the while, global warming has become a greater concern - so much so, that analysts are suddenly concerned about the future of this planet and the wars that this threat might instigate. There are a plethora of measures and ideas being suggested to counter the impact. The choices we make and the decisions we implement will finally determine the future of this planet in the years to come.

Wablet Launches Alpha

Wablet Logo

Wablet is the ‘next big thing’ in instant messaging, and one of the most recent entrants into the IM arena - other major players being Meebo and ebuddy. This Flash-based offering provides a lot of new functionalities including unique web caller ID, integration with blogs and social networks, and separate identities for business, social networks and blogging. This functionality would prove to be very useful in providing users with the choice of who they want to talk to.

The site will appeal to people interested in feature-rich web IM. Integration with other sites such as Myspace, LinkedIn et would prove to be an appealing feature as well. As of now, I have just started checking out the new site. A detailed review might follow soon.

Here is a screenshot of the extremely neat interface - the one thing that I instantly liked.

Google Reader Upgrade

Google Reader has got an upgrade and the site is looking extremely slick now. There are a lot of interesting features that have been added to enhance the usability and online experience for the users. No wonder the company is calling it - “Inbox for the Web”.

There is a new look and feel, folder navigation has become easy, unread item count changes as you scroll down the feeds, and one can now mark items as read or unread. Feeds can be read on a per blog basis, or you can see a consolidated view of all the new feeds. Another neat addition is the one-click sharing of posts with friends. The size of the feed window has also expanded to make it easy to read and scan through the feeds.

I happened to reach a turning point in my online life - as Google has put it. As soon as I was done reading the feeds, I hit NEXT and this is what I got:

World Cup Not Same Without Brazil

Shit happens !!! And in case you are looking for proof - today’s Brazil vs. France match epitomized the ‘adage’ to the fullest. Brazil, the world champions for five consecutive years, could not make it to the semi-finals, and were brutally dominated by France throughout the quarter-final match. France had the perfect strategy up their sleeve - being a strongly defending team, they scored an early goal (Full credit to Zidane and Henry) and then kept Brazil at bay for the rest of the match. Brazil lost 1-0.

It was the worst of the times … 4 yellow cards for Brazil … half-hearted attempts at getting the ball into the nets … Kaka, Ronaldinho, Adriano - all lacklusture performances.

It was the best of the times … France were superb on the field … Henry, Patrick Vieira, Franck Ribery and Florent Malouda were a pleasure to watch … Zidane’s superb touches and virtuosi control.

I was supporting Brazil since the very start of the world cup, and I know another person who would be extremely disappoinated with this loss. Anyways, Portugal beating England was a welcome change and I loved that match. Somehow, I always have a thing about siding with the underdogs - for the simple reason that the passion to succeed is greater than the drive to defend.

Coming back to Brazil vs. France match, the winning team made it obvious that they were not easily intimidated. I would just wait for the next world cup, hoping that Brazil sports a mix of new and old “fit” players, who are not only innovative on field but also ready to experiment. The textbook techniques of playing football are not going to work for Brazil. They completely lacked the fast-passing and attacking manouvers in the game today.

One can only point out the mistakes and rue about them in disappointment. Whatever teams go into the semi-finals now, this World Cup will not be the same without Brazil.

Will HP Beat IBM?

According to a recent BusinessWeek article, Hewlett-Packard is slated to overtake IBM by the end of this year. The new “Tech Superdog” has been consistenly focusing its energies on understanding consumer behaviour and coming out with innovative products - products that are not only at the cutting edge of innovation, but with an excellent after sales support service as well. I had written an article on the extremely pleasant experience of HP Customer Support service sometime back.

After selling its PC business to Lenovo, IBM a.k.a. the “Big Blue” has shifted its focus to large enterprises and corporations. And HP has taken the consumer route. It will be an interesting trend to watch as to what drives more growth. Though it is not exactly comparing apples with apples, but the different strategies of the two companies would provide some insight into the new set of business paradigms. With a leading market share in the printer business as well, HP is all set to become a strong contender for the number one position by the end of this year.

I have always liked HP as a company, and my recent purchase of HP notebook has been one of the best investment decisions that I have made in recent times. I do not doubt that given a chance, HP would be one company that I would love to work for. Or anyone else would for that matter.

Businessweek also provides an interesting piece of information:

IBM started off selling time clocks in 1914, and HP began in 1939 by building audio oscillators.

Most Innovative Companies in the World

A recent study by Boston Consulting Group and Businessweek has ranked the top 100 most innovative companies in the world. The study outlines a very interesting trend.

“The way you will thrive in this environment is by innovating - innovating in technologies, innovating in strategies, innovating in business models.” - IBM CEO Samuel J. Palmisano

Apple tops the list followed by Google. The major innovation plays for these companies can be seen from the likes of iPod and Google Earth - the products spearheading a revolution in the industry. It is also nice to see that some of the companies, which are a part of the list, do not operate in the hi-tech domains. So the innovation process seems to be catching on in lots of different domains in myriad ways. The whole article on BusinessWeek makes for a very insightful reading.

Here is what BusinessWeek writes about Apple and iPod -

The iPod launch involved no fewer than seven types of innovation, including networking (a novel agreement among music companies to sell their songs online), business model (songs sold for a buck each online), and branding (how cool are those white ear buds and wires?). Consumers love the ease and feel of the iPod, but it is the simplicity of the iTunes software platform that turned a great MP3 player into a revenue-gushing phenomenon.

Google Launches Calendar

After the launch of Google Page Creator, the next introduction that the company has come out with is the Google Calendar. I will be posting my experience with Google Calendar soon, but let me tell you that I am liking what I see :-). At least on the face of it, this calendar seems to differentiate itself from other services currently online. And integration with Gmail would be a big plus in increasing its usability. Here is a screenshot of the Google Calendar…
