Netscribes Opens Second Center in Kolkata

Netscribes has opened its second center in Kolkata. As we strengthen our unique positioning in the void created between KPO and consulting firms, Kolkata will offer a largely untapped talent pool as well as immense growth opportunities for our business.

As Sourav said in a recent interview, “Our growth mantra is clearly profitability by providing high-end consultative solutions to clients. With the Kolkata centre in place, we are looking at growing aggressively with a talent pool that can scale up skills wise and not only in numbers.”

I am looking forward to my visit to Kolkata in August. It will be exciting to meet the new members of the Netscribes family and feel the same energy that we have become so used to in Mumbai. I am sure each of the new members of Netscribes family will be getting ready to set on a new career path, embrace the challenges, and chalk out a growth story.

And this is just the beginning …

Thoughts on Business Strategy - I

I have been reading a couple of books on strategy and management, with the most recent one being Dynamic Competitive Strategy. I have come to understand that for every business, there are three key fundamentals. These are People, Working Environment, and Strategic Focus.

People are the most important asset for an organization. No matter what strategic plans and operational restructuring a company decides to undertake, if there are no right-minded people to execute these, the whole exercise becomes futile. At the same time, being right-minded is not the only criteria. A successful company’s key personnel are talented and open to change. Team work is the key to execution and a good leader always gives equal importance to the suggestions of his peers, subordinates and seniors. Undermining the importance of any one group of people is extremely perilous. A recent Harvard Business Review article (needs subscription) also articulates thoughts on what the leaders expect from their subordinates - stressing on the importance of ideas generation and collaboration. All in all, the whole interaction has to be highly productive and mutually beneficial.

We need to consistently challenge our future leaders by giving them greater responsibilities and more challenging work assignments. It keeps them motivated and every new challenge gives them something to learn and improve on. Failure to improvise and create such assignments inevitably would result in disillusioned and demotivated employees, resulting in attrition in worst cases.

I strongly believe in a three-pronged strategy that I personally follow in the course of my work at Netscribes. I call it the 3PLD, i.e. 3-Pronged Leadership Development. The first component of this strategy is to identify potential future leaders through regular feedback and appraisal process. This is different from the company-wide appraisals that are conducted in fixed cyclical formats. Instead of getting stuck in the myopic trend of annual appraisals, an ideal modus operandi is to conduct mini-appraisals for each project and identify the best performers. This would prove to be extremely useful in the longer run and also saves a lot of evaluation time during the annual appraisals process.

The second component of the strategy is to put the identified leaders in decision-making roles and give them newer responsibilities. The magnitude of these roles might vary depending on the complexity of the role and the risk factor associated with decisions. If you feel that a wrong decision might place the project in jeopardy, take constant feedback on their thought process and explain the rationale behind their decisions. This would give them insights on how to take situational decisions and evaluate the implications of their decisions. Needless to say, decision-making is one of the most important functions of a leader.

The final component of 3PLD is to monitor the performance of these future leaders in various situations and identify positions that can now be offered to them. The best possible scenario is where an existing project manager moves out of the project and the identified leader takes his place. The outgoing project manager can move on to a bigger role that could vary from handling a more complex project, or setting up a new project from scratch.

All this has worked for me and my teams. I hope that this works for others as well. If anyone ever follows this methodology, I would love to hear your comments about the same. I will continue with my thoughts on the other two topics, viz. Work Environment and Strategic Focus, in future posts.

Netscribes Spreads Love on Christmas

Netscribes undertook a very thoughtful gesture this Christmas eve - an act of spreading the message of love. As a part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, Netscribes sent its messengers of love to St Stanislaus School, Bandra to spend some time with the kids there. Varghis was the Santa of choice :-).

Even though I was not there with the team, I could see the profound sense of satisfaction and rejoice on the faces of people who went there to cheer the kids. Last year saw Venkat and a bunch of other Netscribians taking up the onus of making Christmas fun for the kids.

DNA has the complete story of Christmas eve’s CSR events.

Festive Season at Netscribes

Netscribes Festive Times

It is nearing the end of another year and Christmas is around the corner. This time marks the start of week long festive celebrations at Netscribes - the week of theme dressing, secret angels and lots of gifts, christmas cake and santa.

People at Netscribes

This is a post dedicated to the ‘mavericks’ at Netscribes.

I have a great job that is not only interesting but fulfilling as well. It involves working on diverse topics right from the realms of information technology to business research and business intelligence. And along with this comes plenty of opportunity for innovation. Everyday at Netscribes brings forth a new set of challenges, new learnings and greater insight into the this rapidly evolving space called knowledge services. Whether it is high end business intelligence or basic data-mining - I have done it all. And I have enjoyed every bit of it. As I have outlined in my previous posts about Netscribes, a good job will not only provide healthy remuneration but would lay greater focus on freedom of thought and an open culture that promotes interaction and discussion.

A major factor in me enjoying my stay at Netscribes is the eclectic mix of people with an extremely interesting and varied thought process. It is this mix of people that are the very DNA that powers this organization. Sitting together and brainstorming on new ideas, or solving day-to-day problems becomes so much fun with my peer group. Every discussion brings about an influx ideas - so much so that we often go back to the discussion table and keep reinventing and refining our existing ways of doing work. The amount of ideas and discussions that we have - healthy debates on the merits and demerits of taking up any one approach during problem solving - becomes so much fun that everyone is extremely enthused to take any responsibility on his/her hands.

I am managing a multitude of projects right now. The insights that you get while working with different teams is extremely remarkable. There are people who are smart - people you can put on any projects and rest assured of a good job. Then there are extremely fast learners - who would scale up depending on the complexity of the work. And then there are the freshers - an exciting bunch of people who have joined the firm recently and are discovering the work environment at Netscribes. These are the kind of people that excite me and make every new day something to look forward to.

This post is just my way of saying thanks to all of my colleagues, who have and are making a difference to the everyday life at Netscribes. You know who you are … so thank you ‘mavericks’ and keep rocking.

Two Years at Netscribes

Today I complete my second year at Netscribes. The journey has been very eventful with a lot of pleasant surprises and heartbreaking events. But all in all, I am enjoying it here and looking forward to another great year and another great stint at this great place.

There have been various key learnings over the short span of two years and along with it has come a sense of immense responsibility. I am still learning in the process and there is a long way to go. For now, it is party time as we also complete two years for our project. The party is happening at Tian in Juhu.

Netscribes Sixth Annual Party

Netscribes Party

The 6th Annual Party of Netscribes was a fun event. On the evening of 9th June, all the roads led to Amnesia, the pub/disc at Hotel Leela. It was true to the Netscribes tradition - a cheerful bonhomie with everyone hitting the dance floor and swaying to the music. The party went on till the wee hours of morning. Of course, equally interesting were the test tube shots that some of us tried. I had a great time.

It was also the last day at Netscribes for Biplab Das, who had come for his summer training from IIMK, and I had come to know this chap as a happy-go-lucky fun chap. Here is wishing him the very best in all his future endeavours.
