Weekend Trip to Murud Janjira

Murud Janjira

I went for a weekend trip to Murud Janjira. It was a great experience, with the rains providing the much needed relief against Mumbai heat. I will be writing a small trip guide for people looking for information on how to go to Murud Janjira, and what are the interesting places to visit there. However, the review is a work in progress as of now. Check out the pics available on my photoalbum.

Nokia M-Blogs now in India

Nokia has recently launched its Nokia M-Blog service for India, wherein you can directly post pictures to your blog that is hosted on the Nokia site. I had recently reviewed Mabber, and how the application might not find a lot of users in India due to the high-priced Advanced GPRS, which is a requirement to run the app. However, Nokia M-Blog application takes care of this issue, and easily connects to the servers. It is nice to see one application that belongs to Web 2.0 and easily works with the basic GPRS (aarrrggh!!!) subscription in India.

For now, you can only upload images to the blog site. Along with the image upload, there is an option to add a caption for the image. I would like to see more text capabilities in this application, to rate it as “The Blogging Application”. A single image upload took took less than 20 seconds for me. The quality of the image remains a concern though. Incidentally, the application reduces the size and the quality of the image so that it can be transferred over a WAP/GPRS network. But that is one issue that I am ready to overlook for now.

I also have set up my own blog to test out the service and the ‘coolness’ factor. I am testing this application right now, and will post an update soon. Till then, check out the service at the Nokia M-Blog site for India.

Whacko Sites

I was surfing the best of Yahoo feeds and came across two whacko sites. They really rock and I am already hooked. Check them out.

New Web Resources

OneLook Dictionary Search is a reverse lookup engine for doing word searches. Enter any phrase you want a word for, and the search results give a list of possible words that match your phrase. An interesting idea.

Also came across AJAX IM platform, which can run within the browser. I liked this new idea, which obviates the need to download and run any IM application outside of the browser. However, compatibility with other IM platforms and applications would be a strongly desired feature for future releases.

Another interesting addition to this week’s website discoveries is smugmug, a photosharing website. The unique feature of this service is that it allows you to geocode your photos, thus making it easy to map them. smugmug uses Google Maps API as the underlying engine to power this interesting feature. Check out the smugmug maps.

Recipes - Served Hot

I was surfing on the web for the blogs and sites that are making news, and came across the Bloggies awards. Listed here in the best meme section was the blog, Is my Blog Burning?. Its a food recipes site based on the same model as some of the photography sites like Photofriday, which call for theme-based postings. In the case of this blog, a weekly/monthly theme is announced and people post their recipes based on that theme and also post their comments. After going through the whole site, I found it much better than those dead monologues on other recipe sites. Finally, the cooking brethren puts on their creative hats to get in the league of the elite recipe makers. Go check it out.

Numanuma

Came across an interesting link on Seth’s site. Go check it out; Its hilarious. The link is Numanuma. Also check out an interesting but time-consuming game, which was mentioned on someone’s site. An ideal way to spend the latter half of Friday in office ;-) The game page can be found here.

Just an afterthought - If you can get fired, while caught sleeping on the job, I don’t know what would happen if you are caught gaming, while the deadline is minutes away. So fight the urge!!!

Informative Matchbox

I came across the ‘Mangaldeep’ brand of matchboxes which have been introduced in the market by ITC. In a new and interesting business paradigm, ITC is putting up cooking recipes on the backside of the matchbox and further, tips that appeal to any woman viz. how to make mehendi last longer and better; how to make sure your clothes don’t lose color when dipped in water et al. Inter alia, the company has also come with a smaller pack AIM which cites a lot of interesting trivia on each box. Will try to get a picture of the matchbox and the printed recipe on it soon.

Makes for an interesting case, where one can become picky about matchboxes. So the next time you go to buy one, you can end up arguing with the shopkeeper. “No Sir, I have already bought this one. Give me other one with some new recipe on it.” Things keep getting harder for the poor shopkeeper around the corner;-).
