Blogosphere Mourns Virginia Massacre

One Day Blog Silence

Silence can say more than a thousand words.

This day shall unite us all about this unbelievable painful & shocking event and show some respect and love to those who lost their loved ones.

On April 30th 2007, the Blogosphere will hold a One-Day Blog Silence in honor towards the victims of Virginia. 33 died at the US college massacre.

The Blogosphere is in deep mourning.

All you have to do is spread the word about it and post the graphic on your blog on 30th April 2007. No words and no comments. Just respect and empathy.

Nokia M-Blogs now in India

Nokia has recently launched its Nokia M-Blog service for India, wherein you can directly post pictures to your blog that is hosted on the Nokia site. I had recently reviewed Mabber, and how the application might not find a lot of users in India due to the high-priced Advanced GPRS, which is a requirement to run the app. However, Nokia M-Blog application takes care of this issue, and easily connects to the servers. It is nice to see one application that belongs to Web 2.0 and easily works with the basic GPRS (aarrrggh!!!) subscription in India.

For now, you can only upload images to the blog site. Along with the image upload, there is an option to add a caption for the image. I would like to see more text capabilities in this application, to rate it as “The Blogging Application”. A single image upload took took less than 20 seconds for me. The quality of the image remains a concern though. Incidentally, the application reduces the size and the quality of the image so that it can be transferred over a WAP/GPRS network. But that is one issue that I am ready to overlook for now.

I also have set up my own blog to test out the service and the ‘coolness’ factor. I am testing this application right now, and will post an update soon. Till then, check out the service at the Nokia M-Blog site for India.

Corporate Blogging in India

Blogs are catching up fast with the Indian populace. Not only is the blogging culture breaking the ice with the young and old alike, but a lot of corporates have already started looking at blogs as a strategic investment (which is always low cost compared to other PR and marketing initiatives). The recent Business Line article throws more light on how Indian companies are also embracing the blogging revolution, and closely monitoring blogs to keep a tab on what is said about the company and its products. Netscribes, being an early entrant into this space, also finds a noteworthy mention in the article. An interesting article with an eclectic mix of thoughts and comments from the leading media, communications and consultancy firms that are studying, or have a presence, in this space.

IBN Journalists Are Blogging

Just check out the CNN IBN website. Most of the popular faces on this channel are blogging, including the likes of Rajdeep Sardesai, the famous cricketer/commentator K. Srikkant, and Sagarika Ghose. A nice commentary on the issues being talked about in the media; and personal thoughts and discussions on various topics that make news. Go check it out.

Wordpress 2.0

Here comes the first post from my blog, now running Wordpress 2.0. Wordpress 2.0 was officially released today, and I have just upgraded the blog to Wordpress 2.0, and even the changes are not visible on the front-end, the admin panel and edit boxes rock. I love the new user interface and the ability to upload images from within. In case you want to explore more about Wordpress 2.0, then check out Owen’s post on What’s New in Wordpress 2.0? The new version is available at Wordpress site.

The funny part is the time it took me to upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0. It took me a total of two hours to complete the upgrade. And that is not because Wordpress got its code all mixed up; do not worry as everything about the new version is rocking. The problem was my 256 kbps Sify broadband connection was proving to be a little slow to copy all the files from my Dreamhost server to my laptop. In short, it took one hour and fifty minutes for tranferring files, and wordpress took nearly one minute for the upgrade. The other ten minutes were spent activating and reinstalling updated plugins.

Anyways, now that I am done, it is a euphoric feeling. New interface, neat writing and better functionality. Wordpress 2.0 Rocks !!!

Hyperwords Firefox Extension

I am one of the users previewing the new Hyperwords firefox extension and it rocks. It is after a long time that some new technology has caught my immediate attention, and this particular add-on for firefox will definitely change the way we search and look for information.

Hyperwords Screenshot

The extension is very simple to use. After installing the xpi in firefox, select anyword on a page by highlighting it and automatically a hyperthread menu appears. You can select any of the options that range from search in Google, Yahoo, look for news, email, translate et al, besides a host of other interesting and useful links. Check out the screenshot for an overview of the menu and the features.

The extension is still in beta, but open for private preview to some selected users. If interested, write to the email address provided on this page requesting for the extension.

Whacko Sites

I was surfing the best of Yahoo feeds and came across two whacko sites. They really rock and I am already hooked. Check them out.
