Google Chrome: The New Internet Browser

The browser war is heating up. Fresh from Google Labs is a new web browser called Google Chrome - an open source browser based on Mozilla Firefox and WebKit. The new browser promises refreshing improvements in speed, security and memory compared to other browsers. Continuing with its endeavor to do things differently, Google has released an online comic that explains the finer details of the new browser.

The beta launch is expected today. Google’s competitive strategy is clearly visible vis-a-vis the timing of the launch. Though the browser has been in the works since quite some time, the announcement comes at a time when the revised version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has just hit the market. How these two browsers stack together, along with Firefox, Safari and Opera, will be an interesting game to watch.

When the giants fight, however, the smaller players often get trodded in the wake. I personally feel that Firefox and Opera should join hands. The combined entity should focus on using the Firefox platform and add Opera’s apps/plugins/features on to the browser. Firefox already has a good fan following and if done right, there could be immense opportunities to garner a greater browser market share.

I believe that analysts at all browser companies will be using their competitive intelligence and strategy skills to decipher how this development will change the browser landscape and the world wide web in the days to come. For now, sit back and watch the fun!

it’s funny, the more i use Chrome (for windows), the more unstable it seems to get… crashes a lot more, can’t handle sites with flash, hangs every time i close a tab… all that to say, i’m switching back to Firefox

Well .. my experience has been relatively better. It has not crashed on me even once … though zooming in and out of videos in Flash does make it hang for a few seconds. But things are improving with frequent updates from Google. Plus I like the super fast speed and low memory load.
